Artist's Statement:

I loved painting and drawing jagged desert outcrops. They are nature’s carvings, symbolising survival under harsh conditions. Their defiant chiselled points are formed by splitting and shattering during sudden changes in temperature. I painted this during a heatwave and heard rocks splitting in the rising heat. I set up a makeshift easel by driving two sturdy stakes in the ground and attaching the Masonite board to the stakes with four clamps. Later I painted a portrait of my father on the other side of this landscape. I needed a board in a hurry for the portrait and because the foreground was unfinished, I decided to use the back of this landscape.
