Self-portrait seated

Self-portrait seated, 1981
acrylic and collage on panel
122 x 92 cm

This is a literal self-portrait – the view one sees of oneself when seated at a table. Instead of the traditional perspective in an aerial view, the artist paints the actual sizes of hands, feet, cat, and objects to harmonise with the sizes of the collaged items (letters, bills, invitation, etc.). It is not a photographic view, where the feet would be tiny compared to the hands, and is therefore not trompe-l'œil.
