Artist's Statement:

From Draw Like da Vinci: An understanding of the structure of the skull is essential for portrait drawing. Familiarise yourself with the skull's form by feeling your own head and observing others. Most of the skull bones like just beneath the skin; therefore their structure is visible and palpable. The only parts of the face with shapes that are independent of the skull are the nose below the bridge, the lips, eyes, ears and cheeks. A child's chubby cheeks contain pads of fat that conceal the cheekbones, whereas a thin face, such as Leonardo's St Jerome, has hollow bony cheeks.
