From Draw Like Da Vinci, p. 70: Chalk, conté and pastel are suitable for drawing animal fur. This drawing follows da Vinci's technique of using different coloured earth-red chalks on red-toned paper. The proportions of the head are marked in first. A light wash is added here and there by picking up the pigment on the page with a damp brush. Lastly, the eye and mouth are emphasised with a touch of black. Notice the bell in the space between the shallow curves of profile in the two heads, and the long bridge of the nose indicated by da Vinci's proportion lines.
