The Cup of Tea

© Susan Dorothea White

The Cup of Tea, 1976
acrylic on panel (plywood)
65 x 70 cm
Collection of the artist

In this painting I contrast the personalities of my Aunty Dot and Uncle Ted, favourite subjects of mine. Both warm-hearted, my aunt was caring and introverted, while my uncle was a cheerful extrovert. Using a fugal like composition, repeating the subject, I show them from various points of view while having a cup of tea. My uncle’s poem is in the foreground.

The painting was from drawings made when visiting Adelaide for Christmas 1975–76. Finalist in the 1976 Sir John Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
