EXHIBITION CATALOGUE: Susan Dorothea White is an Australian artist, living and working in Sydney. Her paintings, sculptures, and prints are represented in collections worldwide including The National Gallery of Australia (Canberra), The Buhl Collection (New York), The Hechinger Collection (Washington DC) and The Majdanek Museum (Lublin).

She has held solo exhibitions in New York, Cologne, Amsterdam, Munich, Sydney, Adelaide, etc.; her first solo was in 1962, her most recent in 2010. She has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, representing Australia in biennales and triennales. Her painting The First Supper (1988) is acclaimed as a postmodern icon of feminist art. Her mixed-media assemblage sculpture It Cuts Both Ways (1998) was purchased by The Hechinger Collection and included in its continuous exhibition in The National Building Museum, Washington DC (2000–2004). Drawing is the foundation of her art - she is author and illustrator of a book on drawing principles Draw Like Da Vinci, published in English, French, Danish, Hungarian (2006–7).

Born in Adelaide in 1941, Susan Dorothea White grew up in the outback city of Broken Hill. Deciding on a career as an artist at age 15, she was encouraged by parents and relatives with a keen interest in the visual arts. In 1959 she commenced full-time study at the South Australian School of Art (Adelaide), where she was awarded drawing and fine art prizes. Moving to Sydney in mid-1960 she continued full-time study for a further one and half years at the Julian Ashton Art School. She has practised and exhibited her art throughout her life.
