Susan Dorothea White

SUSAN DOROTHEA WHITE iis an internationally exhibiting artist based in Sydney.  In a career spanning six decades, she has devoted a lifetime to creating art.  She has held solo exhibitions in New York, Amsterdam, Cologne, Munich, Sydney, Adelaide and other centres in Australia; her first in 1962.  Participating in group exhibitions since 1958 and worldwide since 1980, she has represented Australia in over 60 international exhibitions and biennales.  Recent exhibitions: Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival 2022 (finalist outdoor and indoor), Woolloomooloo Sculpture Walk 2019–2021 (ARTPark), Tom Bass Prize for Figurative Sculpture 2020 (finalist), Harbour Sculpture 2017 (awarded First Prize Inside), Sapere Aude - Circuito Off, Venice Biennale, June 2013 (curated fringe event).

 White’s art is represented in public and private collections worldwide including The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; The Buhl Collection, New York; The Hechinger Collection - International Arts & Artists, Washington; Majdanek Museum, Lublin; regional galleries in Australia.

A multidisciplinary artist, White has mastered skills in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing.  Her sketchbook is always at hand – drawing is the foundation of her art.  The human condition is a core theme of her expression.  Her subject matter encompasses people from all walks of life and ages, including children and babies, as well as human anatomy, and the natural world of landscapes, flora and fauna.  Involvement in community campaigns led to a series of cartoons and posters.

White has developed a distinctive style of narrative composition employing multiple viewpoints with unusual perspective in her portraits and genre paintings.  She has transposed compositions of old masters into modern situations with an ironic twist.  Her bronzes and stone carvings morph the human figure with symbolic forms.  Her mixed media sculptures combine wood carving with everyday materials. 

Teaching experience resulted in a commission to write and illustrate Draw Like Da Vinci (London, Cassell Illustrated - Masterclass Series, 2006) published in four languages with over 100 of her drawings.
